LONDON | Thu May 31, 2012 11:53am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - British singer Amy Winehouse's family have put her north London home up for sale following her death last July, a spokesman for the family said on Thursday.

"The Winehouses have decided to put the house on the market, with great regret," the spokesman said in an email to Reuters.

"Amy loved that house but none of the family felt it appropriate that they should live in it and it was not practical to keep it empty while paying the costs of its upkeep."

Winehouse's fans have flocked to the property in Camden, north London and transformed a nearby square into a shrine following the "Back To Black" star's death.

Winehouse was 27 years old when her body was discovered at the house after a long battle with drink and drugs.

Newspaper reports said the three-bedroomed property had gone on the market for 2.7 million pounds ($4.2 million).

BANGKOK | Wed May 30, 2012 7:25am EDT

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's government is up in arms over a tweet by pop sensation Lady Gaga about buying a fake designer watch in a Bangkok street market and has complained to the United States.

Bangkok's sprawling outdoor markets and some of its big shopping malls are widely known for selling near-perfect replicas of famous luxury brands, often imported from China.

Even so, Gaga's May 23 tweet, two days ahead of a sellout concert in Bangkok, struck a raw nerve with some Thais who said the zany artist had dented the country's reputation by suggesting she could easily get her hands on a fake Rolex watch.

The Grammy Award winner, who cancelled a concert after threats in Indonesia and faced protests by conservative groups in the Philippines and South Korea, has not apologized for the tweet, which Thailand's Commerce Ministry said undermined its efforts to stamp out piracy.

"Lady Gaga is a representative of the U.S. and the U.S. puts pressure on smaller countries to promote the protection of intellectual property," an official at the ministry's Intellectual Property Department told Reuters, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"She should tell her fans that they shouldn't use fake goods."

Gaga's comment stirred debate on Thai web forums and social media. A small protest took place in Bangkok's business district but that failed to keep fans away from her much-anticipated show on Friday, which attracted 50,000 people.

Gaga's contentious tweet to her 24 million followers said: "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy a fake rolex."

She was believed to be referring to the popular Ladies' Market in Hong Kong.

Officials at the U.S. embassy in Bangkok were unavailable for comment.

LOS ANGELES | Tue May 29, 2012 8:55pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are investigating a complaint that Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber roughed up a man who was taking pictures of the performer at a suburban shopping center, police said on Monday.

Deputies were called on Sunday to an outdoor shopping area in Calabasas, about 23 miles northwest of Hollywood, by a man who reported having just had an altercation with Bieber, the sheriff's department said in a press statement.

According to the statement, the man said he was taking pictures of Bieber, who was with his girlfriend, actress Selena Gomez, when the singer "physically battered" him.

Bieber's publicist with Island/Def Jam Music Group could not immediately be reached for comment.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, Lillian Peck, declined to give further details about the nature of the alleged confrontation or any injuries suffered by the man.

But Peck said the man, who was not identified by police, complained of pain, and after requesting medical attention was treated on the scene by paramedics, then taken to a local hospital, where he was examined and later released.

Bieber, 18, who has professed a determination to maintain a squeaky-clean image, had left the shopping center with Gomez, 19, before officers arrived, according to the man with the camera.

Peck said sheriff's deputies are investigating the case as a misdemeanor battery complaint and were looking for any possible eyewitnesses, but she did not know whether they had contacted Bieber about the incident.

The Hollywood news website TMZ.com reported that the man behind the complaint was a professional celebrity photographer.

Citing accounts of witnesses at the scene, TMZ said the paparazzo was blocking Bieber's car as the entertainer was trying to leave and that a scuffle ensued after Bieber got out of his car, asked the man to leave and the man refused.

TMZ also reported that after the altercation, a lawyer approached the photographer and suggested he could collect a lot of money by calling for an ambulance and filing a police report.

The cherubic-faced singer, discovered in 2008 through homemade music videos he posted on YouTube, released his first album at age 15 and rocketed to international fame on his way to logging 41 million fans on Facebook and 20 million on Twitter.

Bieber's latest hit single, "Boyfriend," debuted at No. 2 last month on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday that the recent high school graduate paid $6.5 million for his first house, a 10,000-square-foot (929-square-meter) luxury home set in a gated community of Calabasas. Amenities are reported to include a movie theater with stadium-style seating, a library, wet bar, wine cellar, guest house and swimming pool.

LONDON | Mon May 28, 2012 3:04pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Almost half of Britons believe Britain has changed for the worse during Queen Elizabeth's 60-year reign but most think that celebrations to mark her sixth decade on the throne will be good for business and Britain's character, a poll showed on Monday.

Huge crowds are expected to celebrate 86-year-old Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee next week, which is expected to be marked by a concert at Buckingham Palace, a procession through London and a 1,000-strong flotilla along the River Thames.

An ITV News/ComRes poll found that 47 percent of those surveyed thought that Britain was not as good a place as before her reign, and just over half said they would not go to a jubilee street party or other celebration.

The poll did not say how Britons felt their nation had changed for the worse. Elizabeth has presided over the demise of Britain's once vast empire and many Britons are now feeling the squeeze of tough government spending cuts to tackle a big budget deficit.

However, 80 percent said the jubilee celebrations contribute to Britain's reputation as a country with its own distinct character, and 65 percent said the event was good for the economy. Only 14 percent opposed Britain having a monarchy.

Despite her age, many commentators believe Elizabeth remains an important figurehead in Britain and beyond, a symbol of stability and service that has taken on added weight during straitened economic times.

The wedding of Prince William, the queen's grandson, to Kate Middleton last year helped boost the monarchy's popularity.

ComRes interviewed 2,056 British adults in the period of May 25-28.

MILAN | Thu May 24, 2012 12:20pm EDT

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi paid for sex during at least one party at his luxury villa outside Milan, a witness said on Thursday at a trial where he is accused of paying for sex with an underage prostitute.

Natascia Teatino told the court that a friend named Aris she had accompanied to one of the evenings had said she "received money for (sexual) relations with Berlusconi," adding that she had not specified how much money.

"Aris told me that I could stay and have sex with Berlusconi, but I didn't feel like staying," Teatino said.

Berlusconi, 75, is charged with paying for sex with Moroccan-born Karima El Mahroug in 2010, when she was 17, and then abusing the powers of his office by getting her freed from police custody after she had been arrested for theft.

Prosecutors say that dozens of show girls and aspiring starlets received cash and other gifts for taking part in sex games at his Milan home. Other witnesses have also told the court of gifts of cash and jewelry for sex.

Teatino's friend Aris is on the list of witnesses to be called.

Berlusconi, who denies the charges, says he was only helping the young women out of generosity and accuses magistrates of a politically biased campaign against him. He says his parties were "elegant, convivial dinners".

Teatino told the court that at the end of the evening, several girls received envelopes containing money, but she remained empty-handed.

"I wasn't paid because, as my friend Aris explained, I asked too many questions," she said.

She also described how the evening began with a pre-dinner drink, and then she said Berlusconi handed out jewelry to the group of about 20 girls before they sat down to dinner.

"After dinner Berlusconi said "Let's go to the bunga-bunga" and he took us to the disco room," she said, adding that there she saw him and his associate touching the breasts and bottoms of girls wearing swimsuits or low-cut dresses.

CANNES, France | Thu May 24, 2012 1:53am EDT

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Brad Pitt, in Cannes to promote his latest movie "Killing Them Softly", has no intention of following fiancee Angelina Jolie into directing, he told Reuters on Wednesday.

The 48-year-old, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, hit the red carpet at the film's world premiere on Tuesday, drawing noisy crowds and the world's media to the glitzy ceremony.

As well as playing mob enforcer Jackie Cogan in the violent but darkly comic gangster movie, Pitt was one of its main producers, a side of the business he has become increasingly involved in over the last six years.

Asked whether he might add directing to his career in movies, he replied: "No, not a chance.

"It makes sense on some level, but I really enjoy being a creative producer and I enjoy my day job," he said at the Carlton Hotel on the main Cannes waterfront overlooking the beach and luxury yachts moored offshore.

"It's enough for me. I want to also be a dad, first and foremost. After two days it gets itchy, I miss them. I just know how I'd be, I see how much time it takes to mount the thing and put it together. It wouldn't be a good match."

Last year Jolie, with whom Pitt has six children, directed her first feature "In the Land of Blood and Honey", a hard-hitting drama set in the Bosnian war.

"Killing Them Softly" was directed by New Zealand-born Andrew Dominik, the second collaboration between him and Pitt after they made "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" together in 2007.

GOOD REVIEWS, POISONED POLITICS

Set against the U.S. presidential election in 2008, and the economic crisis during which it was held, the movie is featured in the main competition at the Cannes film festival and has generally impressed critics.

"Here it's artistic merit first and less about an opening weekend," Pitt said, explaining why he thought a launch in Cannes was important for the film.

"They have such respect for the auteur, and you know it's going to get a really respectful viewing."

As well as telling the story of gang violence after a poker game is hijacked, Dominik's third feature paints a bleak picture of the U.S. economic and political landscape.

Pitt said he did not see much hope of improvement in the political climate, which he has described as "toxic," amid the current presidential election year.

"It's such a divide, such a rift, that I don't see any positive outcome," he told Reuters. "And I don't know of anything that's going to bring the two parties together to work together."

The Oscar-nominated actor said he was glad to put something back into New Orleans, where the film was shot, after it was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and subsequently hit by the financial crisis.

"They have a great film infrastructure now and there's amazing rebates for movies to get made ... to help recover from an economic disaster," Pitt said.

"It feels good to bring a film there because you know it's supporting the city, it's a big influx of cash when a movie comes to town. You're giving people jobs and it's a really good feeling. I'm very connected to that place."

Dominik, speaking during a joint interview with Pitt, said he felt intimidated being in competition in Cannes with some of the filmmakers he most admired, including Austria's Michael Haneke who is presenting "Amour".

"The night before (Tuesday's premiere) I kind of felt terrified and I think about midday yesterday I started to realize that it had gone over and I started to feel relieved."

LOS ANGELES | Wed May 23, 2012 5:27pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former first lady Nancy Reagan is recovering from fractured ribs she suffered in a fall at her Los Angeles home, her spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The injury forced Reagan, 90, to miss a speech by U.S. Representative Paul Ryan at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Tuesday, spokeswoman Joanne Drake said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

"Weeks ago Mrs. Reagan took a fall at her home and fractured a number of ribs," Drake said.

She said Reagan was "adding a few appointments back to her schedule" but has been advised by her doctor not to attend large events too far from home yet.

"She personally invited Congressman Paul Ryan to speak at the Reagan Library and really wanted to be there, but sent her apologies to him early yesterday," Drake said.

Reagan, who became first lady in 1981 when Ronald Reagan was elected president, was hospitalized in 2008 with fractures to her pelvis and lower spine suffered in a fall.

Her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the 1990s and she devoted much of her time to caring for him until his death in 2004.

CANNES, France | Wed May 23, 2012 2:55pm EDT
