DALLAS | Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:40pm EDT

DALLAS (Reuters) - Country singer Randy Travis has been moved to a physical therapy facility from a Texas hospital, where he had spent several weeks recovering from a viral heart infection and stroke, his spokesman Kirt Webster said on Wednesday.

He was sent from Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas, to an unspecified rehabilitation center, Webster said in a statement.

"Thanks to all the fans and friends for your continued prayers and support as Randy continues on the road to recovery," Travis' fiancée, Mary Davis, said in an accompanying statement.

Travis, 54, was admitted to Baylor Medical Center at McKinney, north of Dallas, on July 7 for a heart condition caused by a virus. He was later transferred to the heart hospital, where he suffered a stroke on July 10 and underwent emergency surgery.

On July 15, doctors said Travis had regained consciousness and that his condition had been stabilized.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses."

FRANKFURT | Wed Jul 31, 2013 1:37pm EDT

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Berthold Beitz, the 99-year-old conservative head of the Krupp Foundation, died on Tuesday, potentially opening the way for deeper change at Germany's largest steelmaker ThyssenKrupp, already in the midst of a major strategic shift.

The death of Beitz, famous in Germany for rescuing Jews from the SS during World War II, was confirmed in a statement by on Wednesday and prompted tributes from Chancellor Angela Merkel and Jewish leaders.

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder called him "one of the great Germans of the past century" for his actions saving hundreds at the oil refinery he ran in the Boryslav region, now part of Ukraine, between 1941 and 1944.

"For many Jews he was a beacon of hope in a sea of despair," Lauder said. "He was a hero of the Holocaust at a time when it was a crime to be a humane person. He will never be forgotten for his tremendous acts of kindness."

The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, which Beitz headed, has long been seen as a barrier to a takeover or breakup of ThyssenKrupp, which is struggling to swallow billions in losses on its U.S. operation.

Beitz controlled board appointments and pulled strings in the background of an operation which ranges from steelmaking to elevators, submarines and industrial equipment.

For years he had blocked any dilution of the foundation's roughly 25 percent stake which allows it to block capital changes.

But earlier this year, Beitz appeared to signal a change in tone.

"I will not stand in the way of any steps which are for the good of the company," he told German paper Suddeutsche Zeitung, which many took to mean the foundation would allow a capital increase.

"Chief Executive Heinrich Hiesinger has become much more autonomous recently and for example cut the dividend to safeguard Thyssen's cash, but I expect that that management may be able to act even more freely now," a steel analyst said.

The foundation did not immediately announce a replacement for Beitz, a powerful businessman and former insurance executive who has headed the body since 1968.

The Krupp Foundation is an unconventional shareholder. Rather than being focused on maximizing profits, it is a philanthropic body tasked with funding social projects in the areas of education, science, healthcare, sports and culture.

Beitz played a key role in persuading the Krupp dynasty to hand over operational control of the company to the Krupp foundation and in 1998, helped engineer the merger between Krupp and Thyssen to form today's ThyssenKrupp.

"Germany has lost one of its most respected and successful corporate leaders who influenced Germany in important areas," Merkel said in a statement.

"What should in particular be remembered is his courageous and exemplary efforts to protect Jewish workers during World War Two and his early efforts to build bridges into Eastern Europe."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - American actress Eileen Brennan, best known for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1980 film "Private Benjamin," has died from bladder cancer. She was 80.

Los Angeles-born Brennan died on Sunday at her home in Burbank, a Los Angeles suburb, surrounded by her family, said Kim Vasilakis, a media representative for the actress.

"Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Eileen," Brennan's family said in a statement. "She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten. She will be greatly missed by all of us."

Brennan earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination in 1981 for her role as U.S. Army Captain Doreen Lewis in the comedy "Private Benjamin," starring alongside Goldie Hawn.

"No one ever made me laugh more! Now I cry," Hawn wrote on Twitter about Brennan. "Please keep singing, darling, from on high."

Brennan reprised the role of Doreen in the TV adaptation of the film from 1981 to 1983, for which she won an Emmy award and a Golden Globe.

The actress also appeared in TV series such as "Murder, She Wrote," "7th Heaven" and "Will & Grace," and last appeared in the 2011 comedy film "Naked Run."

(Reuters) - Grammy award winning singer and songwriter JJ Cale, one of the most versatile musicians of his era who played everything from rock and roll to blues and jazz, has died after suffering a heart attack, his official website said on Saturday.

Cale, who was 74, won a Grammy award in 2008 for "The Road to Escondido," which he recorded with singer-songwriter Eric Clapton.

Born in Oklahoma City, Cale migrated to Los Angeles in the 1960s and flourished. Rock legend Neil Young once described Cale as the best electric guitar player he had ever seen other than the late Jimmy Hendrix.

Cale's official website said he died on Friday night at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California. There were no immediate plans for memorial services, the website said.

Father of fracking George P. Mitchell dies at 94

HOUSTON | Fri Jul 26, 2013 5:51pm EDT

HOUSTON (Reuters) - George Phydias Mitchell, a petroleum engineer who transformed the natural gas industry by using hydraulic fracturing to pull the fuel out of shale formations, died of natural causes at the age of 94 on Friday.

A native of Galveston, Texas, who rose from modest means to become a billionaire philanthropist, he was the chairman and chief executive officer of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp, which was sold to Devon Energy Corp for $3.5 billion in 2002.

His death was announced on the website of his foundation.

Born in 1919, he rose to become a successful wildcatter - a person who drills exploratory wells in areas not known to hold oil - after being raised by a father he described as a hardscrabble gambler and small-time entrepreneur. His parents were Greek immigrants.

Mitchell drilled for natural gas in a rock formation known as the Barnett Shale in north Texas where the first successful application of hydraulic fracturing, also referred to as fracking, resulted in the viable production of natural gas.

Fracking, in which sand, water and other fluids are blasted into rock formations at high pressure to unlock trapped oil and gas, has vastly changed the U.S. energy supply outlook. The rapid growth in crude production from shale has led to some to predict North America could be energy independent by the end of this decade. The practice has drawn criticism from environmentalists who fear the chemicals used to crack the rock can harm the environment.

Mitchell worked on the technology for 17 years and suffered numerous setbacks before it became commercially viable when he was nearly 80.

"George Mitchell was a true visionary and a pioneer," said Larry Nichols, the executive chairman of Devon Energy and a friend of Mitchell's. "He leaves a legacy that is spreading worldwide - one that for decades to come will be known as the shale revolution."

Mike Yeager, the former CEO of BHP Billiton Petroleum said all of the oil and gas from shale now being produced in the United States "comes from the work of George Mitchell."

Mitchell, a veteran of World War II, was also a real estate developer.

In 1974 he created the Woodlands, a 25,000-acre forested community filled with parks and a 1.4 mile long manmade canal, located about 30 miles north of Houston.

The Woodlands now has a population of more than 100,000 and is home to corporations including Anadarko Petroleum Corp. The world's largest publicly traded oil company, Exxon Mobil Corp, is building a 385-acre campus in the area to accommodate 10,000 employees.

Mitchell, whose wealth was estimated at $2 billion by Forbes, supported a number of causes ranging from the arts to educational initiatives and worked to promote the sustainability of natural gas through his Texas-based foundation.

He raised 10 children with his wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell who died in 2009. In 2011, Mitchell signed the Giving Pledge sponsored by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates, making public his intent that the majority of wealth should be donated to charitable causes.

NEW YORK | Thu Jul 25, 2013 12:57pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon, who will take over from Jay Leno as the host of NBC's "Tonight" show next year, said he and his wife have had their first child, a girl.

Fallon's wife, producer Nancy Juvonen, gave birth early on Tuesday morning.

"My wife and I thank you for all for the nice baby well wishes. Her first day was the best day of our lives. So happy," Fallon said on Twitter on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old comedian, who is the host of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," started out on the long-running "Saturday Night Live" comedy show in 1998.

In April, Fallon was named as the new host of the popular "Tonight" show, which attracts about 3.5 million viewers. Leno was replaced by Conon O'Brien in 2009 but returned to the show a few months later in what turned out to be a public relations mess for NBC.

Along with the change in hosts, NBC said the show will also be moving from Los Angeles to New York.

Singer-songwriter Roy Harper rediscovers youth - and vice versa
Jul 23rd 2013, 14:20

By Jeremy Gaunt

LONDON | Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:20am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - After decades as a critically acclaimed but fringe figure in music, British singer-songwriter Roy Harper is suddenly finding himself in demand.

Aged 72 and some 50 years into his career, Harper has been "discovered" by the young - drawn by his complex, intelligent lyrics and his persona as poetic outsider.

Where once he was embraced by the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin - he sang "Have A Cigar" for the former and had "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" written about him by the latter - he now counts new-folkies like Fleet Foxes, Joanna Newsom and Jonathan Wilson as ardent fans.

Newsom, a 31-year old Californian harpist and singer, went as far as to persuade him to appear with her at the Royal Albert Hall in 2007 and to play his most popular album, "Stormcock", in its entirety.

Harper is now about to release his first collection of new songs in over a decade, the perhaps aptly named "Man and Myth".

"I thought I had retired," Harper told Reuters in an interview, saying he had been happily working away building a garden in his Irish home and cataloguing his life's work.

"I was in one world, but the next world had found me, so I had to respond to it," he said. "That meant gathering my wits and going forward with a new record."

Harper - who is celebrated in part for his refusal to seek commercial fame as his '60s and '70s contemporaries did - expresses little surprise that a new young audience, much of it on America's West Coast, has found him.

"Every generation searches for something to inspire them. It is just the same as I would have been as a younger person looking at those older people like Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis," he said.

"For some reason or another that's the kind of modus operandi that exists between young and old."

MAN AND MYTH

There is a part of Harper - shoulder-length white hair and all - that thinks of himself as part of that young generation, a group he sees as coalescing culturally until it breaks off into nuclear units to have children.

"They have statements to make when they are all together... That's the phase that interests me. That's the phase that can make a shift in human culture.

"I do think of myself as being a member of the youth culture, although my looks would belie that. I am 18 until I look in the mirror - and then the horrible truth dawns."

The new album, to be released in late September, is classic Harper, full of poetic musings such as "The punters gather at prime time/On the flat screens of their dreams/To vote for dumb celebrity/And witter into gathering storms of universal screams".

It will be his 23rd studio album, added to around as many compilation and live releases. He was also on a generation-defining sampler called "The Rock Machine Turns You On" in 1968, along with the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and The Byrds.

Harper says there is a certain maturity to his songs these days that comes with age, but that basically not much has changed since he was a child.

There is a consistency of vision, he says, and all he does is add to it as an artist might add to a big canvas.

"(The vision) is based on what I think of as my own primitive criteria. I am pretty much the same person as I was at six. I have just added to that," he said.

LOS ANGELES | Mon Jul 22, 2013 9:21pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Dennis Farina, the former Chicago cop turned film and television actor best known for his role as wise-cracking detective Joe Fontana on the hit NBC police drama "Law & Order," died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Monday, his publicist said. He was 69.

Farina, who parlayed his experience as a police officer, a Chicago-accented baritone and straight-talking demeanor into a series of tough-guy roles in Hollywood, died after suffering a blood clot in his lung, his publicist Lori De Waal said.

"I was stunned and saddened to hear about Dennis' unexpected passing this morning," Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of "Law & Order," said in a written statement. "The 'Law & Order' family extends sympathy and condolences to his family. He was a great guy."

The Chicago-born Farina earned his first credited screen role in a bit part in the 1981 Michael Mann film "Thief" and went on to play mobsters in two more films - appearing as Jimmy Serrano in the 1988 comic action adventure "Midnight Run," starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, and as Ray "Bones" Barboni in the 1995 gangster satire "Get Shorty," with John Travolta and Gene Hackman.

He gained wider attention on the NBC television series "Crime Story," portraying Lieutenant Mike Torello, head of the Chicago Police Department's organized crime unit, during the show's two-season run from 1986 to 1988.

Farina's role on "Law & Order" from 2004 to 2006 also played on the actor's real-life law enforcement background, with his character on the show, Joe Fontana, landing in the New York Police Department via Chicago.

Despite his background as a cop, Farina made headlines with his own brush with the law in 2008 when he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for carrying a loaded handgun on his way to board a plane.

The actor told police he had brought the pistol with him on a drive from Arizona to Los Angeles and had forgotten it was in his briefcase when he tried to pass through airport security.

He later pleaded no contest - roughly equivalent to a guilty plea in California - to carrying a weapon into a secure area of an airport and was sentenced to two years of probation.

The actor's final starring role was in the short-lived HBO TV mob and horse-racing drama "Luck," opposite Dustin Hoffman. The critically acclaimed series was canceled after its first season due to the death of three horses during production.

Farina also played small parts in the 1998 caper film "Out of Sight," starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, as well as Steven Spielberg's 1998 Oscar-winning World War Two epic "Saving Private Ryan" and the current Fox TV comedy "New Girl."

Farina is survived by three sons, six grandchildren and his partner of 35 years, Marianne Cahill.
