ISLAMABAD | Wed Oct 30, 2013 11:52pm EDT

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Even as Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani was one of the most eloquent critics of Pakistan's military, the nuclear-armed country's most powerful institution.

Haqqani, once derided at home as Washington's ambassador to Pakistan for his pro-Western views, has taken a step further, accusing the government of directly supporting militant groups in his latest book "Magnificent Delusions".

Now a professor of international relations at Boston University, he was ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011, a turbulent time in U.S.-Pakistan relations that culminated in a raid by U.S. special forces in May 2011 that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Haqqani resigned in November 2011 and left Pakistan after becoming involved in a scandal surrounding a secret memo that accused the army of plotting a coup and sought help from the United States to rein in the military.

Haqqani, who has denied any connection to the memo, spoke to Reuters by telephone from the United States about his book and his views on U.S.-Pakistan relations.

Q: Why do you believe Pakistan supports militant groups?

A: As far as terrorism is concerned, Pakistan was the conduit of weapons and training for the jihad in Afghanistan against the Soviets. After that, Pakistan switched it to India, especially in Kashmir. And that is the point at which the United States said "You are engaging in terrorism". The Pakistani response was "But we started it together".

The problem is that the pro-jihadi narrative has become so mainstream that it is very difficult for any government to ... put all jihadis out of business. But Pakistan would not find peace without putting all jihadis out of business.

Q: Why is this happening now?

A: The whole idea of building a nation around religious nationalism has backfired. What has happened is that religious nationalism has only produced extremism. If Pakistan were to be an Islamic state, the question arises "What kind of Islamic state?" We are now in a virtual civil war between various sects and militias attached to these sects who don't tolerate each other.

Q: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif just concluded talks with President Barack Obama during his visit to the United States. What do you think they really talked about behind closed doors?

A: There is a Groundhog Day quality to Pakistan-American discussions, especially since the end of the anti-Soviet war in Afghanistan. Each time there is a change in government in Pakistan or in the United States there is a build-up of hope that maybe this time we will resolve it.

That is why I titled my book "Magnificent Delusions". Everybody is just deluding himself. The big American delusion is that America gets leverage with Pakistan by giving it military and economic aid. It doesn't.

It just improves its access but it does not give it leverage because the Pakistani establishment does what it thinks is in Pakistani interests. They do not allow an honest debate about what is in Pakistan's national interest. They do not allow people like me to argue that our policies are not in our national interest.

On the other hand, the Pakistani delusion is that Pakistan is going to succeed with the kind of policy it pursues. In fact, what America needs to do is prove to Pakistan that its policies will fail instead of buying time with a little bit of aid.

Q: What do you expect to happen now that U.S. forces are leaving Afghanistan and Washington's focus shifts to other parts of the world such as Syria?

A: Pakistan needs to think and plan for the day when America will lose interest in Pakistan and the region. Pakistan's best options ... are to find peace with its neighbors and have ambitions that are realistic, not delusional...

If Pakistan is able to switch this focus from jihad to economic development ... then perhaps even an American abandonment will not be such a big problem for Pakistan.

LONDON | Wed Oct 30, 2013 1:17pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Coffee drinkers in Brazil, America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East are expected to down more arabica beans in their brew in the coming year as cheap prices attract additional demand for the higher spec product.

A surplus from top grower Brazil after two successive bumper crops helped drag arabica prices to a four-and-a-half-year low this week, which is likely to prompt roasters to increase the use of the bean in their blends.

But drinkers detecting more of arabica's distinctively sweeter, gentler notes in their cup will probably be saying more about the power of suggestion than their discernment, as roasters will only be tinkering with blend changes that consumers are unlikely to notice.

A Reuters poll of 10 international coffee traders and roasters showed that between 3 and 4 million 60-kilogramme (132 lb) bags of coffee demand - out of a market total of more than 140 million - is forecast to switch out of robusta beans into arabica in 2013/14.

Arabica beans are usually found in high quality brands and typically trade at a premium to the hardier, more caffeine-rich robusta beans, which are widely used in instant coffee.

Lately the price difference between some of the lower grade arabicas and robustas has been eroded, putting in reverse the trend from 2011/12, when roasters increased the proportion of robusta in their blends to the tune of around 5 million bags globally due to a historically high premium on arabicas.

"Clearly it's happening, although I don't think it's going to be as big as the switch we saw out of arabica in 2011/12," a European analyst said.

"The biggest swing is in Brazil."

The world's top coffee grower is also one of the largest consumers, using over 20 million bags a year. Up to 1.5 million bags of Brazil's domestic robusta consumption was forecast to switch into arabica in 2013/14.

"Domestic roasters are fairly flexible so they can move out of robusta into low-grade arabicas on a large scale," said a trader, adding that Brazil was a very price-sensitive market.

SECRET RECIPE

Coffee roasters, typically secretive about their blends, stepped up substitution of arabicas with robustas after ICE benchmark arabica futures rose to a 34-year high in May 2011 and the premium over robusta hit about $1.90/lb.

The premium has since narrowed to below 40 cents, and dealers said it could shrink further.

There is a wide spectrum of qualities within the arabica and robusta varieties, so the premium varies between different grades, with traders noting that Brazil's rio minas arabica had traded at a discount to some robustas in the past month.

"There will be switching, but the quantity will depend on the quality of low-grade arabicas," a trader at an international roaster said.

Roasters have become more nimble in recent years to enable themselves to react to prices and availability.

"In general customers (roasters) have become a little bit more flexible in comparison to 10 years ago. In the past the blend or ingredients were written in stone, they were untouchable, and that has changed," a coffee trader said.

Beyond Brazil, traders and roasters said America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East could also see some switching, the trader said, noting that emerging coffee markets were less sensitive to taste changes.

"In emerging countries people go more for price than anything else; they are not so picky quality-wise," the head of coffee at an international trade house said, adding that the Western European market was not as flexible.

Robusta coffee futures traded at a three-year low this week, but traders were more bullish on their price outlook versus arabicas, pointing to low exchange stocks as a trigger for future price rises to attract fresh beans. [ID:nL5N0ID3XO]

In September brokerage Marex Spectron forecast 2013/14 global coffee supply and demand at close to balanced, after a 7 million bag surplus - all in arabicas - the previous year.

Brazil's coffee production rises and falls from one year to the next due to its biennial cycle, as arabica trees need time to recover after bearing large quantities of cherries.

The variations between 'on' and 'off' years have been diminishing, however, partly due to improved maintenance, replanting of trees with higher-yielding varieties and increased use of fertilizer and irrigation.

The International Coffee Organization has not yet published forecasts for 2013/14. It estimated 2012/13 global production at 145.2 million bags, of which around two fifths is robusta. The ICO pegged world consumption for calendar year 2012 growing 2.2 percent to 142 million bags.

Future demand growth is expected to be focused in Asia, the region where most of the world's robusta is grown, and where coffee is mostly consumed in the form of soluble or instant.

"I don't think that (the switching) means robusta demand is falling. I think demand in Asia is strong enough that it more than cancels any of that out. Both robusta and arabica demand will grow this year," a trader said.

SOFIA | Wed Oct 30, 2013 11:04am EDT

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarian authorities said on Wednesday they would take into care most of the brothers and sisters of Maria, the four-year-old whose discovery in neighboring Greece captured global attention.

DNA tests have confirmed that Sasha Ruseva, 35, is the biological mother of Maria, whose blue eyes and blonde hair aroused the suspicions of Greek police when they raided a Roma camp this month.

Ruseva and her husband, both Bulgarian Roma, have nine other children aged between 2 and 20 and live in deep poverty, occupying one room in a crumbling house in the town of Nikolaevo, 280 km (170 miles) east of Sofia.

TV footage that showed the children in shabby clothes sleeping on a mud floor and speaking little Bulgarian caused public outrage.

"We decided to accommodate four of the kids with foster families," Diana Kaneva, head of the agency for social assistance in the area, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Two children will be sent to a state institution and one will be placed with relatives of the family," she said, adding that the measures were temporary and contacts between children and their parents would be encouraged by the social workers.

Two other children are over 18 and not subject to state protection.

Maria, dubbed "the blonde angel" by Greek media, is now in the care of the Athens-based charity Smile of the Child.

On Tuesday, Bulgarian authorities said they would take steps to bring her back to the Balkan country.

Ruseva, who said she left Maria as a seven-month-old baby with another couple in Greece because she was too poor to care for her, has also said she would like to take her back.

Both parents are jobless and live on welfare payments. Ruseva is under investigation over whether she was paid for handing over her child, which she denies. The couple in Greece have been charged there with abducting a minor and detained.

The case has illustrated the plight of Roma gypsies in Bulgaria, the European Union's poorest member state. Many spend their lives close to destitution, illiterate and on the fringes of society.

NEW YORK | Tue Oct 29, 2013 3:30pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Lou Reed, the pioneering musician who fronted influential rock band The Velvet Underground in the 1960s and won mainstream acclaim with solo songs "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Perfect Day", died on Sunday aged 71.

Reed, whose band fused music and art in collaboration with its early benefactor, pop artist Andy Warhol, died at the Long Island home he shared with his wife, Laurie Anderson, following complications from a liver transplant earlier this year, his literary agent Andrew Wylie said.

"I think Lou was as great an artist as it was possible to be," Wylie said. "It's a great loss."

Formed by Reed and classically trained Welsh-born musician John Cale in the mid-1960s as an experiment in avant-garde rock, The Velvet Underground gained Warhol's notice soon after hitting the New York club scene.

While the band never achieved great commercial success, it revolutionized rock in the 1960s and '70s with a mixture of thrashing guitar licks and smooth melodies sung by Reed or the German model Nico.

The Velvet Underground has long been recognized as a major musical inspiration for punk art and rock, as reflected in an oft-repeated quote by musician and producer Brian Eno, who told music journalist Kristine McKenna the first Velvet Underground album only sold 30,000 copies but that "I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band."

Neil Portnow, president the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which bestows the Grammys, credited Reed with "introducing avant-garde rock to the mainstream."

"His uniquely stripped-down style of guitar playing and poetic lyrics have had a massive influence across many rock genres, including punk and alternatives," Portnow said.

Fellow avant-garde rocker David Bowie, who helped produce Reed's second solo album and is often cited as one of his greatest musical heirs, posted a picture of the two recording stars together on his Facebook page, saying of his old friend: "He was a master."

Cale, who played bass, organ and viola in the Velvets and had an often-fractious relationship with Reed, said on his Facebook page: "The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet ... I've lost my 'school-yard buddy,'" he said.

Reed and Cale put aside their differences to release a tribute album to Warhol in 1990 called "Songs for Drella." That album led to a handful of reunion performances by members of The Velvet Underground's original line-up - rounded out by guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker - in the early 1990s.

Musician Iggy Pop's official Twitter account called news of Reed's death "devastating," while musician Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth tweeted: "So sorry to hear of Lou Reed's passing this is a huge shock!"

An admitted hard drinker and drug user for many years, Reed underwent a liver transplant earlier this year in Cleveland, his wife revealed, after he had canceled a series of California concert dates in April.

"I am a triumph of modern medicine," Reed posted on his website on June 1, 2013, without directly acknowledging the transplant. "I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future."

LYRICS THAT SHOCKED

Reed has been widely credited with expanding the lexicon of rock 'n' roll with provocative lyrics that chronicled androgyny, illicit sex, and drug abuse, notably in the song "Heroin," in which he declares, "It's my wife, and it's my life."

"Walk on the Wild Side," a catchy tune from his second solo album, "Transformer," co-produced by Bowie, became Reed's only top-20 hit single, though it contained lyrical references to transexuality, drugs and male prostitution.

"Sister Ray" - a 17-minute blast of guitar distortions - likewise combined stories of sailors, oral sex, murder, intravenous drug use and the mysterious title character.

"I never in a million years thought people would be outraged by what I was doing," Reed said in a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone magazine. "You could go to your neighborhood bookstore and get any of that."

One of his signature songs, first performed by The Velvet Underground and later a staple of his solo act, was simply titled "Rock & Roll," a semi-autobiographical story of how music saved the life of a young fan listening on the radio.

His stage persona, sometimes appearing in a dog collar and eye makeup, opened the door for Bowie and other artists to take sexually ambivalent styles into the mainstream.

It was personified in the landmark live album "Rock N Roll Animal," released in 1974. That record closely followed the studio-record rock opera album "Berlin," which he brought to life again with a 2006 concert that was made into a 2007 film directed by Julian Schnabel.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of The Velvet Underground, Reed grew into something of an elder statesman of rock, a towering figure in a club with fellow legends such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Reed always placed great importance on song-writing. One of his first jobs out of college was as a staff writer for Pickwick Records. He dedicated the 1966 song "European Son" to the late poet, Delmore Schwartz, under whom he studied at Syracuse University.

Reed was married three times, the latest to recording and performance artist Laurie Anderson in 2008, and in recent years took an interest in photography, staging exhibitions of his work.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty on Monday to misdemeanor assault after a fight that broke a man's nose on Sunday outside a Washington hotel, the latest legal run-in for the Grammy-winner.

After spending the night in jail, Brown left the courthouse in a crush of security and press as fans crying "Chris, Chris" tried to rush the artist. He faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

Brown, 24, was arrested early on Sunday outside the upscale W Hotel, a few hundred yards from the White House. Brown's bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, 35, was also arrested, charged with assault and released after pleading not guilty.

Brown won a Grammy for best R&B album for F.A.M.E. in 2011 and is known for hits including "Deuces" and "Look at Me Now." He appeared handcuffed in District of Columbia Superior Court, where a defense lawyer entered the not guilty plea on his behalf.

After the not guilty plea, the judge ordered Brown released, touching off a smattering of applause from fans in the courtroom. The judge also set a preliminary hearing for November 25 for both defendants.

"Christopher Brown committed no crime," his lawyer, Danny Onorato, said in a statement. "We understand that his security acted to protect Mr. Brown and Mr. Brown's property as he is authorized to do under District of Columbia law. We are confident that Mr. Brown will be exonerated of any wrongdoing."

The episode began when two women asked Brown to be in a photo with them outside the hotel, a Metropolitan Police Department incident report said. Brown objected when Parker Adams, 20, of Beltsville, Maryland, tried to get in the picture.

"I'm not down with that gay shit," Brown said, according to the report. "I feel like boxing."

Brown, in Washington for a nightclub appearance on Saturday, punched Adams in the face, and Hollosy did the same, according to the report. Hollosy then pulled Brown by the arm to the singer's tour bus, the report said.

Brown denied punching Adams, and Hollosy said he intervened when Adams tried to get on Brown's bus, according to a court charging document.

Adams was taken to the hospital and treated for a broken nose, the charging document said.

Brown has been on probation since 2009 after assaulting pop singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend. Brown's probation was revoked over the summer after he was charged in a hit-and-run traffic accident in Los Angeles, but reinstated after he agreed to another 1,000 hours of community labor.

The Los Angeles District Attorney's office has accused Brown of cutting corners on his community labor sentence, which he was allowed to complete in his home state of Virginia.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rapper Chris Brown was due in a local Washington, D.C. court on Monday to face a felony assault charge stemming from a fight outside a hotel, the latest legal run-in for the Grammy-winning singer.

Brown, 24, was arrested early on Sunday outside the upscale W Hotel, a few hundred yards from the White House. Another man involved in the fight, Christopher Hollosy, 35, described in news reports as Brown's bodyguard, was also arrested and charged with felony assault.

Brown, known for hits including "Deuces" and "Look at Me Now," was set to appear in District of Columbia Superior Court Monday afternoon, after arraignments begin at 1 p.m. EDT, a court spokeswoman said.

A call to Brown's attorney was not immediately returned.

A Metropolitan Police Department incident report said two women asked Brown to be in a photo with them outside the hotel. He objected when Parker Adams, 20, of Beltsville, Maryland, tried to get in the picture.

"I'm not down with that gay shit," Brown said, according to the report. "I feel like boxing."

Hollosy then pulled Brown by the arm to the singer's tour bus, according to the report.

Adams had "swelling and bruising to the nasal area" with apparent broken bones, the report said. Medics took him to a local hospital for treatment.

Brown has been on probation since 2009 after assaulting pop singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend, and the new arrest could complicate the parole. Brown's parole was revoked over the summer after he was charged in a hit-and-run traffic accident in Los Angeles, but reinstated after he agreed to another 1,000 hours of community labor.

WASHINGTON | Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:24pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rapper Chris Brown was arrested and charged with assault in Washington early on Sunday after getting into a fight with a man outside a hotel near the White House, police said.

Brown was charged with felony assault at 4:25 a.m. (3.25 a.m. ET) after the altercation outside the W Hotel, a few hundred yards (meters) from the White House, Officer Anthony Clay of the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Another man involved in the fight, Christopher Hollosy, was arrested on the same charge. News reports referred to the second individual as Brown's bodyguard. Clay said he could not confirm Hollosy's relationship with Brown.

The victim was taken to the hospital, Clay said.

Brown has been on probation since 2009 for assaulting Rihanna, his then girlfriend, and the new arrest could complicate that parole.

This was revoked over the summer after Brown was charged with a hit-and-run traffic accident in Los Angeles, but reinstated after he agreed to another 1,000 hours of community labor.

The Los Angeles County Attorney's office has accused Brown of cutting corners of his community labor sentence, which he was allowed to complete in his home state of Virginia.

NEW YORK | Sun Oct 27, 2013 8:15pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Lou Reed, the pioneering songwriter and musician behind the influential rock band Velvet Underground, which fused art and music in collaboration with artist Andy Warhol, died on Sunday at the age of 71, his literary agent said.

Reed, best recognized by mainstream audiences for his 1972 solo hit "Walk on the Wild Side," died at the Long Island home he shared with his wife, Laurie Anderson, following complications from a liver transplant he underwent earlier this year, his agent, Andrew Wylie, said.

"I think Lou was as great an artist as it was possible to be," Wylie said. "It's a great loss."

While the Velvet Underground never achieved great commercial success, the band revolutionized rock in the 1960s and '70s with a mixture of thrashing guitar licks and smooth melodies sung by Reed or the sultry German model Nico, who briefly collaborated with the band at Warhol's insistence.

The band has long been recognized as a major musical inspiration for punk art and rock, as reflected in a quote often attributed to musician Brian Eno: "The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band."

John Cale, who co-founded the Velvet Underground but had a sometimes fractious relationship with his former bandmate, released a statement on his Facebook page: "The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet ... I've lost my 'school-yard buddy,'" he said.

Cale and Reed put aside their differences to release a tribute album to Warhol in 1990 called "Songs for Drella," which lead to a handful of reunion performances by members of the Velvet Underground's original line-up in the early 1990s.

"Walk on the Wild Side," a catchy tune off his second solo album, "Transformer," co-produced by fellow avante-garde rocker David Bowie, became Reed's only top-20 hit single, though it contained lyrical references to transexuality, drugs and male prostitution.

One of his signature songs, first performed by the Velvet Underground and later a staple of his solo act, was simply titled "Rock and Roll," a semi-autobiographical story of how music saved the life of a young fan listening on the radio.

His stage persona, often appearing in a dog collar and eye makeup, opened the door for Bowie and other artists to take sexually ambivalent styles into the mainstream.

It was personified in the landmark live album "Rock N Roll Animal," released in 1974. That record closely followed the studio-record rock opera album "Berlin," which he brought to life again with a 2006 concert that was made into a 2007 film directed by Julian Schnabel.

Later in his career, Reed became something of an elder statesman of rock, a towering figure in a club with fellow legends such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Reed always placed great importance on song-writing. One of his first jobs out of college was as a staff writer for Pickwick Records. He dedicated the 1966 Velvet Underground song "European Son" to the late poet, Delmore Schwartz, under whom he studied at Syracuse University.

Reed was married three times, the latest to recording and performance artist Laurie Anderson in 2008, and in recent years took an intense interest in photography, staging exhibitions of his work.

(Reuters) - Actress Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel on the Fox show "The Simpsons" and earlier Carol Kester, the receptionist on the 1970s sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show," has died at 70.

"I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," said executive producer, Al Jean. "She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character."

Wallace, who had survived breast cancer, died at home, according to a Fox publicist, Antonia Coffman.

A fellow cast member and voice of Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, wrote a farewell to Wallace on Twitter Saturday morning.

"Cheers to the hilarious, kind, fab Marcia Wallace, who has taken her leave of us. Heaven is now a much funnier place b/c of you, Marcia," Smith tweeted.

Wallace won an Emmy for outstanding voice actress in 1992. Her long-running "Simpsons" character Edna Krabappel was Bart Simpson's jaded, crabby fourth-grade teacher.

Earlier, Wallace played the chatty receptionist on "The Bob Newhart Show." She also appeared on "The Merv Griffin Show" and game shows such as "Hollywood Squares" and "The $25,000 Pyramid."

Executive producer Jean had previously hinted about killing off one of the show's characters.

"Earlier we had discussed a potential storyline in which a character passed away," Jean said in a statement. "This was not Marcia's Edna Krabappel. Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her."

Wallace published an autobiography "Don't Look Back, We're Not Going that Way," in 2004. Her husband, hotelier Dennis Hawley, died in 1992. She had a son, Michael Hawley.
